How to Remove Guitar from a Song for Free (Offline)
Learning a guitar part is easier when you can play it over the real band with the original guitar gone. Until recently that meant hunting for a backing track that may not exist. Now AI can split a finished song into separate instruments, guitar included.
This guide shows how to remove the guitar from a song for free on a Windows PC with underdaw. Everything runs offline on your computer.
Why most vocal removers can't remove guitar
Most free tools split a song into just two parts: vocals and "everything else". The guitar stays mixed in with the bass, drums and keys.
To remove only the guitar you need a 6-stem model. It splits a song into:
- vocals
- drums
- bass
- guitar
- piano
- other
Once the guitar has its own track, you can mute it and keep everything else.
Step 1. Install underdaw
Download underdaw free from the Microsoft Store or get the installer from the home page. It runs on Windows 10 and 11. There is no account, trial or watermark.
Step 2. Separate the song with the 6-stem model
- Open Stem separation and pick your music file.
- Choose 6-stem as the model. This is the one that splits out guitar and piano.
- Start. A graphics card (GPU) makes it much faster, but it also works on CPU.
The first time, the app downloads the model once. After that, your files separate without an internet connection.
Step 3. Mute the guitar
When it finishes, the song opens in the Library mixer with one row per instrument.
- Press M on the Guitar row to remove the guitar.
- Press S (solo) on the Guitar row to hear only the guitar. This is great for figuring out a riff by ear.
- Lower the guitar fader instead of muting it if you want a quiet guide while you learn.
Step 4. Practice over the track
The practice tools sit on the same screen:
- Slow it down without changing pitch to learn fast passages.
- Change the key in semitones if you play in a different tuning.
- Loop a hard section and turn on the metronome or count-in.
Step 5. Save the backing track
Click Save and export WAV, FLAC or MP3. You can also save every stem as its own file, so you keep the isolated guitar for later.
Getting a cleaner guitar split
- Use the best source you have. A WAV or high-bitrate file separates better than a low-quality MP3.
- Expect some overlap with other instruments. Guitar shares frequencies with keys and synths. A clean or acoustic guitar usually separates better than a guitar buried in a dense wall of sound.
- Two guitars end up in one track. If the song has rhythm and lead guitar, both land on the Guitar row together.
Record your own take
When you're ready, record your guitar over the backing track in the built-in studio. You can add effects and an amp model, then export a finished cover.
Use separated tracks for personal practice and study. Publishing or selling anything made from a copyrighted song needs the rights holder's permission.
